Omaha Hilton Expansion Design Awarded To Dallas Firm

A source alerted us yesterday that they heard through the grapevine that the City of Omaha-owned Hilton expansion Design project was awarded to a firm out of Dallas, TX.

After doing some checking around, I found the contact for this bid’s contact info on this bid (“RFP: Expansion and Renovation to Hilton Omaha – Architectural and Engineering Design Services”).

I called the contact for the bid, Richard Tattersall–who has a Chicago phone number, which is kind of strange–to find out more about this bid.

Tattersall said “this bid has been awarded to RTKL out of Dallas, TX.”

This sounds a lot like the beginning of the whole Hilton mess when it was originally built.

Let me get this straight: we pay a consulting firm from outside the state (HVS) $15,000 to tell us to expand a hotel–again, owned by the City of Omaha, in the middle of a terrible economy where business and convention travel is WAY down–and then hire a architectural firm that is located in Dallas to design it?

Are there really no companies in Omaha that can’t do this? I find that very hard to believe. The cost savings had better have been extremely significant to justify this.

And you wonder why Mayor Suttle’s approval rating is 23%…

Much more on this topic on tomorrow’s show. We are on KOIL AM 1180 from 10-11am or stream us from right here on our website. And we will want your take: (402) 342-1180.

City Council, please remove head from bum.

On Saturday’s show, we vehemently tackled a city council proposed tax against people who commute and work in Omaha. This so-called “wheel tax” will appear on Tuesday’s council agenda, and if passed, would charge a “wheel fee” to anyone who lives outside Omaha but works in the city, and thus drives on city streets.

In other words, the city council wants to charge people for driving to Omaha to work. If anything, we should be THANKING these people. Not taxing them. We understand that the city is strapped for cash, but is this the best answer you can come up with? C’mon.

For more information on this proposal, check out the Omaha World Herald Article >

Another brilliant idea council. Download Saturday’s show and listen to our many arguments in opposition to this stupidity and hear our solution >

MAHA and The Trans Canada Pipeline

Saturday was a glorious day for making radio. First, it was the day of the MAHA Music Festival and we gave away tickets. A lady named Linda even called and said we were funny. Thanks Linda.

We also covered some hard-hitting local issues, like the stupidity of the Trans Canada Pipeline. We also chatted about Mayor Suttle’s new budget and a dream for gumdrop street and candy cane lightpoles.

Then, to close off the show we brought back one of our favorite segments…Garage Sales.

It was a good time, and you should download it and give it a listen >

Now about that pipeline. Please take some time and read up on the issue. Visit BoldNebraska.com for details on how you can make your voice heard. Overall, the rewards of having the pipeline moved west do not even come close to the risks. Not even close.

Here’s list of articles about the issue >

Please feel free to leave a comment about the pipeline issue. Do you think it’s good for the state of Nebraska?

Thanks. And enjoy the show.

RFD-TV is in the house. In more ways than one.

On Saturday’s show, we were joined by Raquel Gottsch from RFD-TV: Rural Americas Most Important Network. And to those who didn’t hear the show, RFD-TV is Omaha’s only locally produced cable channel. Launched in December of 2000, RFD-TV is the nation’s first 24-hour television network dedicated to serving the needs and interests of rural America and agriculture. And now, if you live in Omaha, RFD-TV is available in your home through COX Cable – channel 275 on the Variety Pak tier.

Their programming includes all sorts of rural shows. Everything from ag and equine news to Hee Haw, Roy Rogers, Crook & Chase and more. Oh, and by the way, they just purchased Trigger – Roy Roger’s 41-year deceased horse. You know what that sounds like? Awesomeness.

After Raquel left, the conversation moved to just how important agriculture is to the state of Nebraska and why RFD-TV is nice to have.

Then we talked about Husker Football and the whole “Red Out Around the World.” What do you think…should this marketing push have included the term “beat Texas” as it did prior to July 14th? Chime in!

Phew. Okay you should just check out Saturday’s show.>

Lucky Bucket. Lucky us.

It’s like a holiday every time we talk with the fine folks at Lucky Bucket / Solas Distillery. Take this past Saturday. Our guest was Zac Triemert, the head man in charge. The Genius. The Baller (check out the cover of the latest Omaha magazine).

Anyway, another fun and awesome interview with Zac. We went into a little more detail this episode about the distilling side of their operation. So this interview may be very informative to many of you. It was to us.

Thanks again to Zac!
